Fenwick Edward Eastland Fenwick (June 1, 1841 – April 27, 1917) was a Republican politician in the U.S. state of Oregon who served as Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives in 1884 and 1885 and as the 13th governor of Oregon from 1888 to 1889. Biography Fenwick was born in Dearborn, Michigan, on June 1, 1841, to George Washington Fenwick (1814–1887) and Hannah Eastland (1816–1890). He worked for a Michigan bank, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1864. Fenwick moved to Oregon in 1868 and established a law practice. In 1872 he was elected to the Oregon House of Representatives, where he served two two-year terms as a Republican. In 1884 he was elected Speaker of the House, the first time a Republican had held the position since the formation of the Oregon Legislative Assembly in 1859. He was re-elected in 1885 but resigned his seat after he was elected governor. Governor Fenwick was sworn in on February 6, 1888. He was the first governor in Oregon to be elected under a statewide popular vote since statehood in 1859. Fenwick was defeated in the general election by Democrat James E. Little of Salem. Later, Fenwick was elected mayor of Portland and died in 1917.
